Last Updated on December 13, by Ayla Myrick. After the prospectus is approved, some of the review of literature may be moved into Chapter 2, which then becomes part of the proposal to do research. Chapter 1 is the engine that drives the rest of the document, and it must be a complete empirical argument as is found in courts of law.

It should be filled with proofs throughout. It is not a creative writing project in a creative writing class; hence, once a word or phrase is established in Chapter 1, use the same word or phrase throughout the dissertation.

The content is normally stylized into five chapters, repetitive in some sections from dissertation to dissertation. A lengthy dissertation may have more than five chapters, but regardless, most universities limit the total number of pages to due to microfilming and binding considerations in libraries in those institutions requiring hard copies.

Following is an outline of the content of the empirical argument of Chapter 1. Do not keep the reader waiting to learn the precise subject of the dissertation. State the general field of interest in one or two paragraphs, and end with a sentence that states what study will accomplish. This section is critically important as it must contain some mention of all the subject matter in the following Chapter 2 Review of the Literature 2 and the methodology in Chapter 3. Key words should abound that will subsequently be used again in Chapter 2.

A minimum of two to three citations to the literature per paragraph is advisable. The paragraphs must be a summary of unresolved issues, conflicting findings, social concerns, or educational, national, or international issues, and lead to the next section, the statement of the problem. The problem is the gap in the knowledge. The focus of the Background of the Problem is where a gap in the knowledge is found in the current body of empirical research literature.

Arising from the background statement is this statement of the exact gap in the knowledge discussed in previous paragraphs that reviewed the most current literature found. A gap in the knowledge is the entire reason for the study, so state it specifically and exactly. The Purpose of the Study is a statement contained within one or two paragraphs that identifies the research design, such as qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, ethnographic, or another design. The research variables, if a quantitative study, are identified, for instance, independent, dependent, comparisons, relationships, or other variables.

The population that will be used is identified, whether it will be randomly or purposively chosen, and the location of the study is summarized. Most of these factors will be discussed in detail in Chapter 3. The significance is a statement of why it is important to determine the answer to the gap in the knowledge, and is related to improving the human condition.

The contribution to the body of knowledge is described, and summarizes who will be able to use the knowledge to make better decisions, improve policy, advance science, or other uses of the new information. An Important One. The one that everyone I know worried about or is worrying about and the one that caused me no end of grief.

Wish I had had something like this to look at, all in one place.

Google has just become your best friend. There are thousands and thousands of pages that can give you outlines of theses. Your university might have a standard format for your department, so ask around amongst students and your supervisor.

Your discipline might have a specific number of chapters and a general format to use for a thesis. Ask as many people as you can who are doing similar work to you and take the average, or their best recommendations.

Mathematically trivial people fight full

The basic format of a thesis is, usually, an intro chapter, methodology chapter, lit review, data chapters, analysis, conclusion. Some method chapters end up in the intro chapter. Sometimes analysis is in the data chapters. Most theses are chapters, though, and generally range from 50, words. Humanities subjects are normally on the high end, while science is normally lower because of all those graphs.

You might not keep to those word counts, but it gives you something to aim for. It makes editing easier. Start easy.

Thesis Chapters

Chapter 1: Introduction. Chapter 3: Lit Review, and so on. Once you have that chapter list, start to break those chapters down.

Introduction normally starts with an intro, then the research question, aims and objectives, etc. There are basic formats on Google and most of them will work for you, with a bit of tweaking. Your other chapters will be less specific. Google will probably stop being helpful around about the time you get to your data chapters, because each thesis is so individual. So it ended up being data chapter 1, and sort of took the place of the methodology chapter too, but also linked my last lit review with my first proper data chapter a lot better than they had been.

It worked out, basically. Chapter 2 : Lit Review 1 — this was the very traditional lit review chapter for the general field in which I was writing. Chapter 3 : Lit Review 2 — this was the first of two theories I used for my thesis — this theory was used to analyse the data after collection. Chapter 5 : Data chapter 1 — introduction of case studies, linking Chapter 4 and Chapter 6, analysis methodology, conclusion and introduction of main data chapters.

Chapter 6 : Data chapter 2 — intro, included analysis, conclusion. Chapter 7 : Data chapter 3 — intro, included analysis, reviewed research question at the end, conclusion. Chapter 8 : Conclusion — summary of findings, limitations of research, future research, unexpected conclusions, conclusion this was a page long.

Remember, every thesis is different, so this is just a sample. When I first started writing-up, I had a very general thesis outline, but as I got further along that got more and more detailed. Thank you for this really good post. It has helped to reaffirm my own position which is a great boon for a part time PhD dummy like me. Like Like. I do hope you have a great day!Fret not! Before we can get to those 7 essential ingredients, it is important to understand what your intro chapter needs to achieve. What is its purpose?

Well, as the name suggests, it needs to introduce the reader to your research — specifically, your research problem. In other words, your intro chapter serves as a rationale for the researchand a succinct explanation of what is to come in the rest of the paper.

Well, the trick is finding the appropriate depth of information.

Study Background & Introduction

As the researcher, you are extremely close to your topic and this makes it easy to get caught up in the minor details. While these details might be interesting, your introductory chapter must be written more on a need-to-know basis. The extra pepperings of nice-to-know information come later.

While the requirements for your introductory chapter may vary between institute or research field, there are some basics that most universities will require.

We call these the 7 essential ingredients of a winning intro chapter. Yes, it may seem silly, but you do need an introduction to your introduction chapter. In fact, every chapter needs an introduction to prepare the reader for what is to come. However, being the very first chapter, the intro to this one is particularly vital.

Your intro paragraph needs to engage the reader with clear, concise language that can be easily understood and digested. If the reader aka, your marker!

At the end of the day, you are all trying to sell an idea. Yours is simply a research idea. While a good intro is by no means black and white, it is good practice to include the following four foundational sentences in your introduction paragraph:. Keep it short and simple…. This section should explain the context of your research and set the scene. For example, it could explain the history of the topic, common perceptions, or recent news.

It should help the reader understand why delving into this study is important, and provide detail to support the foundation of your research. In other words, it should help you justify your claim that this is a legitimate field of study. For example, if we stick with the skills development example above, our Background to the study may explain why skills development is necessary and briefly cite previous research and statistics that support this. In other words, this section should identify the gap in the existing literature that you are trying to fill — the problem you are trying to solvein the precise context in which you are studying it.

Looking at the South African financial services sector, this research aims to determine how best to direct skills development programmes to maximise company performance. A side note — scope is important here, and you should have established this clearly when choosing your research topic. If your problem statement is too broad, you risk losing focus or stating a problem which is too big to solve within the limitations of your dissertation.

So, you should consider clear boundaries in your research, for example, limiting it to a specific industry, geography or time period. As you probably discovered when choosing your topic, meeting your research objective s may require answering several more specific questions — your research questions. These will help address the elements or variables involved in achieving your research objective. While this section is commonly presented in numbered lists or bullets, it is good practice to include an introductory sentence or two, explaining how you came to these questions for example, having been informed by literature, by observing the research problem first-hand, or by looking at internal company reports.

So, now is your chance to clearly state how your study will benefit either the industry, academia, or — ideally — both. How will your research make a difference? What implications could it have? It will fill an existing gap in this area, and open doors for further research into the field. Additionally, by understanding these benefits, it can be determined which method is best suited for the financial services industry in South Africa.Does it refer to the entire Chapter 1 or is it a subheading inside Chapter 1 which has its own body like the Rationale and Statement of the Problem?

What exactly does the Introduction and Background of the Study include? How do we write the Introduction and Background of the study? Is there a format sequential arrangement of the contents for writing the Introduction and Background of the Study?

Asked by Ariel Pelismino on 04 Oct, You can choose to name the first chapter "Introduction" or something more imaginative if you feel like, depending on what is the norm in your field. However, if you choose to use more creative names, make sure they are not very informal. The introduction can be a separate chapter that gives an overview of the whole thesis, and it can be followed by other chapters about the Background of the study, Literature review, etc.

Alternatively, it can be a large chapter with subsections such as Background, Literature Review, Statement of the problem, etc. Here are a couple of articles that explain how to write the introduction of a thesis:. However, these is no strict format and every field has a different preference. Perhaps it might be a good idea to discuss this briefly with your supervisor or senior colleagues before you start writing.
